Louis Vuitton Alma PM
The Louis Vuitton Alma PM has been around long enough to know exactly what it’s doing.
Its story dates back to the 1930s, when Louis Vuitton introduced a structured handbag known as the Squire Bag — a design that would eventually evolve into the Alma we know today. The name came later, inspired by the Pont de l’Alma in Paris, and the bag’s distinctive curved shape has since become one of Louis Vuitton’s most recognisable silhouettes.
For this competition, we’ve gone for the Louis Vuitton Alma PM in black Monogram Empreinte leather.
And yes, black was very much deliberate.
Empreinte is Louis Vuitton’s supple grained cowhide leather, embossed with the house’s famous Monogram pattern. Rather than printing the LV initials and flowers onto the surface, the motifs are pressed directly into the leather, giving the pattern depth and texture.
On the black Alma, the result is beautifully understated. You still get that unmistakable Louis Vuitton detailing, but the tonal Monogram sits quietly within the leather rather than shouting from the other side of the street.
The Alma itself has changed surprisingly little in spirit over the decades. Its curved top and structured base give it that immediately recognisable architectural shape, finished with rolled leather handles and a double zip that opens almost all the way around the top of the bag.
Then there’s the padlock.
Part practical detail, part tiny piece of Louis Vuitton history, it’s a nod to the house’s beginnings as a maker of trunks and travel pieces. Louis Vuitton was making luggage long before handbags became the objects of obsession they are today, and those travel roots still show up throughout the Alma’s design.
The PM size is also a particularly good version of the Alma. It has enough room to behave like a proper everyday handbag rather than something that requires an advanced qualification in miniature packing, while still keeping the neat proportions and structured silhouette the design is known for.
And black?
It works with practically everything, doesn’t have a season and, perhaps most importantly, is considerably more forgiving of actual human behaviour than cream leather.
There is a reason designs like the Alma stick around. Fashion can change its mind approximately every seventeen minutes, but a beautifully made black leather handbag with a genuinely useful shape has a rather good chance of surviving whatever comes next.
